Accessory Navicular Syndrome

What is it?
This is a bony prominence located on the midfoot region or the midtarsal region of the foot. It is usually painful. It occurs in conjunction with flat foot deformities. Due to the attachment of the posterior tibial tendon in the area, this problem can be diffucult to treat conservatively and surgical treatment may be nessesary in extreme conditions.

Classification:
Type I: small 4-6 mm ossicle just proximal to the navicular tuberosity.
Type II: Xray shows an extension of the navicular bone
IIa: superior placement of the accessory bone.
IIb: inferior placement of the accessory bone.
Type III: Enlarged navicular tuberosity

Treatment:
1. Custom molded orthotic device or Significant AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) may be needed.
